Your Vote, Your Future
Your Vote
We are a student-led organisaion based in the South East of England that is campaigning to lower the voting age to 16. We believe that 16 and 17 year olds should have the right to vote in all elections to ensure policies are made for their future.
3 reasons why you should be able to vote
Have a say in government policies
By lowering the voting age to 16, you will be able to vote, and directly impact policies that will affect you.
Your Rights
At 16, you gain fundimental rights. You can pay taxes, joing the army and at 17, you can donate blood; so why can't you vote?
Your Brain
Scientific research has shown that 16 year olds are just as mature as their 18 year old counterparts and are able to make informed decisions.
2024 General Election
During the 2024 General Elections, the Labour Party stated: We will increase the engagement of young people in our vibrant democracy by giving 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote in all elections.in their manifesto. However, this failed to be in the King's Speech and Labour has not said they would go ahead with this anytime soon.
We need to hold them accountable!
Academic Support for Votes at 16
Leading academics have conducted extensive research supporting the case for lowering the voting age to 16. Dr Jan Eichhorn's comprehensive study on voting at 16 in Scotland has shown remarkable results, demonstrating increased political engagement and maturity among young voters.
Your Future
Young people are the future. We believe that young people should have a say in the decisions that affect them.
How this will benefit you?
Change in policies
Introducing a large new demographic, will bring able change; forcing parties to make new, benefitcial policies aimed towards young people.
Encreased Engagement
In Austira, they have already lowered the voting age to 16, and the turnout of this group has been over 10% greater in some regions. We believe we can do the same.
Politically Aware
Studies show, having political education at school directly benefits your ability to be enganed with politics for longer. A report led by the University of Edinburgh School of Social and Political Science found that those who had been able to vote from 16 went to the ballot in greater numbers, and were more likely to continue voting as they entered their 20s.
